Is there any centralized Paranormal Investigators Registry? Something that keeps other groups from taking over the names of existing groups? Maybe some centralized group where people can say "I'm from Calif. and I would like someone to come out and look at my house becuase I think it's haunted' ...?

Re: Paranormal Investigators registry?
Sun, October 28, 2007 - 10:43 PMAs far as I know, no. However I think that TAPS has a pretty good contact list running on their site (of established, trustworthy groups). There might also be a few others rolling around, but none of them are comprehensive. We did some internet searches for our name before adopting it and didn't find any. Now, however there are two groups I know of with similar names. Another problem with the whole idea is that there are now a ton of groups popping up all the time from kids who just want to cemetery hop with an excuse- to folks who want to be full blown investigators. There seems to be a general resistance to homogenizing practice or imposing any sort of regulation- partially because each groups mission statement and methodology can vary so widely. Since it's not a solid science, yet, leaving the walls off the box is the best way to keep things open and encourage people to keep experimenting until the success rate of evidence collection can become consistent enough to be recognized scientifically. Even the notion of certification is a current huge 'issue' with a fairly even split between who thinks it's beneficial and who thinks its self agrandizing nonsense.
It does appear (after googling) that some states have registrys :-)
